Jack the Lad - newborn photography

Natural newborn photography at home

Meet Jack the Lad

So I've written before about how newborns call the shots when it comes to photography.  My recent shoot was no exception!

Meet Jack, 'Jack the lad' as his parents and I now call him after his cheekiness on his recent newborn photo shoot. At exactly one week old, he had his own ideas about how our session would go...

The ideal time to get the sleeping baby shots is when they are under four weeks old. But Jack had other ideas. He didn't sleep, not properly anyway. He catnapped on mummy and the second she put him down, he woke up.  This continued for quite some time.

So, we simply rethought the style of the photos and I think got a better result.  We went for candid, natural, documentary style images, mainly with him awake (!) that reflected the family and suited the little monkey far better.  It meant his proud big sister could also get involved in more of the photos and we got a far wider selection of styles that captured the family at that moment.

It was such an enjoyable session as, not only do I love a challenge, but it meant we tried lots of new things.  My favourite moment had to be when Jack pooped all over Daddy. That lovely bright yellow, breastfed newborn poo that streamed down Daddy's arm, onto his white t-shirt, and down his leg onto the new cream carpet... Detailed description I know, but as poos go, it was epic timing!  More importantly though, Dad is really pleased with the image.

Such a handsome little man with bundles of character already - plus very forthcoming with the cuddles, which for me is the best bit!
